A Guide to Cannabinoids Terminology

With a plethora of information on the web about CBD, hemp seed oil, and the different types of CBD oil products available, we've put together a helpful guide that defines all the lingo and explain their benefits.

WHAT IS CBD?
CBD, or cannabidiol, is a compound found primarily in the hemp plant's flowers and leaves. It's one of many natural essential oils that's extracted from the flower and is known for supporting the body and mind in various ways.
CBD oil contains a variety of active compounds such as cannabinoids and terpenes. It has been shown in research studies to be well-tolerated and non-toxic to humans.

HOW DOES IT WORK?
Our bodies have a vast network of receptors, called the Endocannabinoid System. Its purpose is to help us stay balanced, even when challenged by external factors and certain lifestyle choices. CBD and other cannabinoids fit into those receptors helping us stay in good health by supporting many of the body's physical processes.

WHO CAN TAKE IT?
Studies show that CBD oil can be tolerated by most.

What Is the Difference Between Hemp Seed Oil and CBD Oil?
Hemp seed oil and CBD oil are not the same product. Hemp seed oil is the oil extracted from hemp seeds and is generally used for cooking and dietary supplements. Hemp seed oil does not contain any CBD or other cannabinoids. On the other hand, CBD oil is made by extracting the essential oils from the entire plant and contains cannabinoids, terpenes, and other active compounds.

Types of CBD Oil: Full-Spectrum v. Broad-Spectrum vs. Isolate

Full Spectrum CBD Oil
Full Spectrum hemp oil refers to a complete hemp plant extract with Delta 9-THC, cannabidiol, minor cannabinoids, and terpenes.

Broad Spectrum CBD Oil
Broad Spectrum CBD oil is very similar to a full-spectrum oil. Broad-spectrum CBD oil also contains beneficial cannabinoids and terpenes but has all trace amounts of THC removed. This is ideal for those who want no THC in their CBD products.

CBD Isolate
CBD Isolate is a pure, crystalline powder that contains 99% pure CBD. All the plant matter in the hemp plant, including oils, waxes, chlorophyll, other cannabinoids, terpenes, and more, is removed, offering a finished product that's CBD and nothing more.

What Are Cannabinoids?
Cannabinoids are active compounds produced by all cannabis plants. Research has found that there are between 80-100 cannabinoids found in a cannabis plant. Below are just a few of the different cannabinoids:

  • Cannabidiol (CBD)
  • Cannabichromene (CBC)
  • Cannabinol (CBN)
  • Cannabigerol (CBG)
  • Cannabigerolic acid (CBGA)
  • Cannabidivarin (CBDV)
  • Cannabidiolic acid (CBDA)

What Are Terpenes?
Terpenes or Terpenoids are very common chemical compounds in plants and animals that function as primary biosynthetic cellular messengers. Terpenes are oils secreted by the glandular hairs found most densely on female plants' floral leaves and flowers. Although terpene molecules are all very similar, each has its unique scent and flavor. Various combinations of terpenes are responsible for the distinct aromas of cannabis strains. Terpenes can also have powerful effects on our bodies. Humans have utilized terpenes for millennia in a healing modality known as aromatherapy.
Some common terpenes:

  • Limonene: Has a strong citrus odor like orange, lemon, and lime. It has been known to promote a general uplift in mood.
  • Linalool: Has floral and Lavender undertones. It has been known to promote calming and relaxing effects. It has been used for reducing anxiety and used to aid sleep.
